Man vs. Machine

Virtual assistant vs. operator?
Gas stations with full service vs. gas stations with no service?
Desk check in at airports vs. quick check in kiosk?

Machines have had a huge impact on our lives. Their isn't an aspect of our lives technology has not effected. As much as I love computers and machines I feel very disturbed when a function that I am use to if preformed by a human is replaces by a machine.

Can a help button really make you feel better than a teller when withdrawing money from a machine and something goes wrong? What about gas stations? In the 50's they were full service. They checked your tires, oil, wiper blades, and even washed your windows. Now you have a button that is on the pump: Have you ever had to use it? I did yesterday and it didn't do anything. That made me feel really uncomfortable because later I had to contact the bank to check if everything was still kosher. I punched in a bunch of numbers on a dial tone phone and the whole time never spoke or interacted with a living person.

What is the price point? At what length are we willing to sacrifice human jobs to save a buck? Do you like the direction we are going?

My 2 cents:

No, I don't like the direction we are taking. I miss human contact. It's so infuriating, especially when you have a problem. (My ADSL server/company even makes me call a toll number when I have a problem with their service... that we pay 45 euros/month for! Even if the problem is their own damn fault, too! Argh!)

Anyway, it's a shame... and there's so much unemployment, too.

It's all wrong... but so inevitable, it seems to me.
